And what makes this guy part of the cultural elite? He seems to think rather highly of himself, based on the way that he writes. So far, the man seems to be of no particular intellectual consequence.

Keen is completely ignoring the signaling value of advertising. The most important piece of information that an ad can send is that the advertiser is willing to spend money on the ad.

Spam and highly targeted ads don't send the same signal that a big ad buy does. Ads on random user-generated content don't send the same signal that ads on expensive video or hard-to-research information do.
