A hard drive crash does de-authorize the files from being played. Copying them to an external hard drive and then returning them to my new internal hard drive was unsuccesful because the files were no longer authorized.

I only lost one file, which was a free download from the iTMS. If I had been paying for the files, I would have been quite angry.

That said, you can successfully re-authorize your computer to play the files again, provided that you recall the email and password you previously used for your iTMS account (which you might have also lost in your hard drive crash).
