Technology Liberation Front: TechLawJournal Parses Phone Company Denials

Is it possible that the companies didn't provide the actual phone numbers, but gave calling information with the actual phone numbers replaced with non-identifying (but consistent) values?

That way, the NSA could research calling patterns, but not determine who the individuals are without following further legal processes.

Remotely possible. But unlikely. Given that they trust themselves to do the right thing, why would they take this precaution against abuse? It would only hinder their ability should they want to investigate a number. But much is unknown . . .

What about other phone companies? Like Qwest? or my local re-supplier? or long distance phone companies, like Power Net Global? Or, right now, are just Verizon, BellSouth and AT&T; involved? I'd sure like to know that answer. And if a re-supplier is using Qwest lines, can Qwest access my call records and turn them over without the local re-supplier even knowing about it?
