Technology Liberation Front: So You Still Believe in Infrastructure Socialism?

  • dimitris · 3 years ago
Last year, Verizon sent a team of contractors out to my neighborhood to dig up my front yard and lay the new lines. And then, for reasons I still can't quite understand, another team came back and dug up my yard again to install more stuff! My wife wasn't real happy about the mess this created (and all the grass that died as a result), but I just kept telling her that one day it would all be worth it.

    And that day has arrived.

Glad it worked for you. Remember that it depended on your next door neighbors (and their neighbors, etc) also getting their yards dug up, whether they wanted it or not. If they resisted, uniformed men with guns would make them stop.

I guess it's only socialist when you don't agree with it.

Congrats on getting FiOS in VA--I've heard nothing but good things. Unfortuneately, we're still waiting here in NJ (Verizon's home state!) to have access to the service.

Let's here it for competition. I hope it spreads, and rapidly. Verizon has made headway in VA, CA, and MA. Hopefully NJ is next and then a whole multitude of other states. Low prices and reliable services are good for the consumer. Keep 'em coming!

I just learned that Red Bank (NJ, for you outlanders) has granted Verizon permission to offer FIOS, so maybe my dire predictions of not living long enough to see it are unfounded. Like Jerseygirl, I hear that FIOS is worth the fight and the wait. Keep us posted, Adam. I sure hope "they" are right, but I know you'll tell us.

I'm not sure why "pesky" municipalities are interested in perpetuating cable monopolies. Well, I have my guesses, but they should be advocating choice in their communities. As for New Jersey, isn't that their home state? It seems somewhat absurd that they aren't able to introduce FiOS in the state in which they are headquartered.

Has anyone heard anything more about Verizon moving thoughout New Jersey with their FIOS project? I know they are trying but local cable franchise laws were preventing them from having any success or offering competition for the consumer.

Well, I'm with your wife at this point; not happy with Verizon's mess! They just dug a huge chunk out of our yard with a backhoe today as they hit a gas line while digging to place the new lines! I'm in Everett, Washington, and I sure hope this mess pays off!!! And that they repair my yard!
