    It is probably useful to remember that the pharmaceutical industry has its feet in both patent worlds - they patent inventions requiring high sunk costs and true innovation but they also patent things like the combining of new salts and compounds with known pill technology. They don't like the idea of obvious or inefficiency-creating patents disappearing because those represent a chunk of their "intellectual property", not the revolutionary cures.
